TEMA’s mission is to achieve scientific and technological excellence, addressing the needs of Portuguese society and industries.

Manufacturing and process industries over the world are facing unprecedented competitiveness challenges. Companies must provide new solutions and products at an ever-increasing rate, being flexible to meet changing market conditions as fast as possible. Also, they must maximize productivity by reducing waste and by optimizing existing physical assets and human resources. TEMA is aware of the major challenges of today, not only confined to the scientific ones but also the societal ones, one of the H2020 pillar’s, placing an effort to have its research disseminated by high impact journals to the international scientific community. As part of this strategy, a lot of energy is put in increasing the number of its members involved in project teams, strategical scientific networks and dissemination and communication events.

Maintaining its essence of the classical mechanical engineering research and development areas, TEMA follows the natural evolution of engineering towards new areas, namely, nano- and bio-technologies, thus ensuring a strong focus on developing fundamental research at different areas of intervention. To pursuit these goals and according to its mission, TEMA is organized in six distinct research groups: The Applied Energy (GAE) research group develops work on thermomagnetic convection, alternative energy sources, energy and fluid mechanics and enhanced thermofluids; The Transportation Technology (TT) research group develops work on safe, sustainable and integrated transportation system, such as the impact of transportation systems, and intelligent transportation systems and life cycle assessment of alternative energy vectors for transportation; The Nanotechnology Research Group (NRD) commits to research and development of innovative nanostructured materials for application in biomaterials and medicine, electronics, surface sciences and energy; The Advanced Mechanical Engineering (GAME) research group develops works on material forming processes, interlaminar fracture of composites, structural adhesives and mechanical testing of materials; The Biomechanics (GIBUA) research group develops work on computational and experimental biomechanics and the development of medical devices; The Software Development and Research Group (GRIDS)  responsible for developing computational mechanics solutions for a large number of areas such as material forming, composite materials, numerical optimization, damage and fracture, structural stability, buckling  and instrumentation/control.

With its multidisciplinary nature grounded in mechanical engineering, TEMA embraces all research groups in a professional, coherent and tuned management considering strategical pillars based on scientific excellence and in the alignment with the industrial and society’s needs and demands.
