Materie und Licht für Quanteninformation” (ML4Q) ist ein Exzellenzcluster, der im Rahmen der Exzellenzstrategie der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) seit 2019 gefördert wird. ML4Q ist ein Verbundprojekt der Universitäten Köln, Aachen und Bonn sowie des Forschungszentrums Jülich.

Ziel von ML4Q ist es, neue Computer- und Netzwerkarchitekturen zu schaffen, die auf den Prinzipien der Quantenmechanik beruhen. Quantencomputer versprechen Rechenleistung jenseits derer aller klassischen Computer (z.B. für Materialforschung, Pharmazeutik oder künstliche Intelligenz). Quantenkommunikation ist abhörsicher verschlüsselbar und kann helfen, sichere Kommunikationsnetzwerke zu realisieren. ML4Q bündelt die einzigartige Expertise der beteiligten Partner in drei Schlüsseldisziplinen der Physik (Festkörperforschung, Quantenoptik und Quanteninformation), um die beste Hardware-Plattform für Quanteninformations-Technologie und Blaupausen für ein funktionales Quanteninformations-Netzwerk zu schaffen.

“Matter and Light for Quantum Computing” (ML4Q) is a Cluster of Excellence funded within the Excellence Strategy by the German Research Foundation (DFG) since 2019. It is a cooperation by the universities of Cologne, Aachen, and Bonn, as well as the Research Center Jülich.

The aim of ML4Q is to develop new computing and networking architectures using the principles of quantum mechanics. Computing and networking power beyond anything classically imaginable would make quantum computers powerful tools in key areas such as materials design, pharmaceutics, or artificial intelligence. Quantum communication could be made effectively secure. ML4Q builds on and extends the complementary expertise in the three key research fields (solid-state physics, quantum optics, and quantum information science) at the partner institutions in order to develop the best hardware platform for quantum information technology, and provide comprehensive blueprints for a functional quantum information network.
