The University of Twente offers two vacancies: PhD-student positions

    The Chair ofLaser Processing in the Faculty of Engineering Technology of the University of Twente has an opening for a PhD candidate in the research area of laser-based Large Scale Additive Manufacturing. At the Chair we study the fundamental physical phenomena occurring during laser-material interaction, in order to optimize laser-material processing for controlled laser-based additive manufacturing (AM). As such we take part in a nation-wide research effort on additive manufacturing. Will you be a member of this research team involving 4 Dutch technical universities and 20 industri al partners?

    JOB DESCRIPTION

    The project “Additive Manufacturing for Extra Large Metal Components” (AiM2XL) aims at the production of large-scale (~1 to >10 m) additively manufactured metallic components for maritime applications. One of the research important topics in this project is to predict the microstructure and composition of laser-based AM for the development of tailored properties of metallic components. To predict the relationship between processing conditions (laser parameters and material parameters) and resulting microstructures and composition in the material, the temperature profiles need to be established with a high degree of accuracy. It is therefore essential to both model and measure the transient spatial temperature distribution.

    • You will develop numerical models for efficient simulation of (temporal and spatial) laser-induced temperature profiles and microstructural evolution during and after production;
    • ·To that end, you will
      • choose appropriate advanced numerical techniques and optimize them for simulation of additive manufacturing;
      • validate your simulation models by measurements on actually produced samples;
    • You will closely collaborate with your research-team colleagues at University of Twente, at the universities in Delft, Eindhoven and Groningen, as well as with the consortium of industrial partners;·
    • You will mentor BSc and MSc students, who do graduation projects in support of your research;·
    • You will finish your research with a PhD thesis.

    Your profile

    • You hold a MSc degree in mechanical engineering, applied physics, or a closely related discipline, with a strong background in metallurgy or materials science
    • You have excellent skills and experience in application finite element methods and programming for numerical simulations;
    • ·You have a strong analytical mind and an eye for detail to develop fundamentally robust algorithms, as well as a critical attitude towards assessment of simulation and experimental results;
    • ·You are aware of:
      • fundamental aspects of high power laser-material processing, such as laser cladding,
      • analysis technologies/techniques such as SEM, EDX, AFM, confocal microscopy, etc;
    • You like to present your results to colleagues, industrial partners and at international conferences;
    • You are fluent in English and express yourself easily both in speech and in writing. We require a TOEFL > 90 or IELTS > 6.5 score.

    • You are offered a professional and personal development program within Graduate School Twente;
    • ·A starting salary of € 2.222 in the first year and a salary of € 2.840 in the fourth year gross per month;
    •  A holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary and a year-end bonus of 8.3%;
