Vacancy: HEAD OF LASER RESEARCH LABORATORY at the Chair of Laser Processing at the University of Twente (NL)

Job description

Laser sources are applied for material processing like surface treatments, additive manu­facturing (3D printing), as well as for micro- and nano-manufacturing. The Chair of Laser Processing, at the University of Twente, studies the fundamentals of laser-material interaction both theoretically and experimentally. Scientific findings are exploited to optimize laser-based manufacturing. The Chair is embedded in the department of Mechanics of Solids, Surfaces and Systems (MS 3) of the Faculty of Engineering Technology of the University of Twente. The facilities of the Chair include two state-of-the-art laser laboratories. One lab is equipped with high power lasers and multi-DOF robots. The second lab is a clean-room hosting (ultra) short pulsed laser sources.

The Chair of Laser Processing is currently seeking for a full-time Head of our Laser Research Laboratories.  

  • You will design, implement and test non-standard multi-domain experimental opto-mechanical research setups, for research projects, including laser source(s). To that end, you will select, produce (or outsource) and integrate, next to laser source(s), photonic components (e.g. Pockel cell, automated attenuator, harmonic conversion units, laser power sensor, beam profile analyzer, etc.), opto- and mechanical components, high speed electronic components and develop application software, etc.
  • You will carry out experimental research, such as feasibility studies, as well as in the analysis and interpretation of experimental results. This will include, but is not limited to sample preparation and the use of analysis tools, such as confocal microscopy, SEM, XRD and AFM.
  • You will contribute to the writing of scientific publications (journal, conferences) based on results of experiments.
  • You will contribute to the definition of laser-related research of the Chair, as well as contribute to drafting research proposals of the Chair. You will support acquiring new project, also by including discussions with clients,
  • You will also responsible for operational, improvement and maintenance aspects of the laser-related research setups, as described above. To that end, you will also setup and maintain (digital versions of) user manuals, work protocols, practices of good conduct, and the laser-wiki, which is the on-line knowledgebase of the Chair. Also, you will act as the (laser) safety officer of the Chair, regarding two laser laboratories.
  • Co-operation with adjoining chairs within the department of MS3 related to research and education is highly encouraged.
  • You will be contributing to guidance, teaching and training of Bsc-, MSc- and PhD-students on the design and use of scientific setups and analysis tools, such as confocal microscopy,
  • You will design & imple­mentation of (practical) assignments, as well as tutoring these students during the assignment.

Your profile

  • You are an independent head of our laser research laboratories with and explorative mindset, who can identify relevant research & experimental questions in this context, plan and execute experimental research.
  • You hold a MSc in Physics (preferably with a specialization in photonics/optics), or Mechanical Engineering, with proven skills in laser material processing or applied laser technology;
  • You have experience in design, implementation & testing of (scientific) experimental setups, including laser source(s), as well as operating and maintaining these setups; as well as in electronics, manipulators (e.g. fast and accurate stages and galvo-scanners) and software including (embedded) programming skills such as Python, C and Matlab.
  • You have good coaching skills.
  • You have proven skills and capabilities in carrying out experimental research and analysis and interpretation of results;
  • You have a broad research interest to support development of new laser-based manu­fac­turing techniques, also with adjoining research groups;
  • You have excellent command of English. Knowledge of, or willingness to learn, Dutch.

  • A gross salary between € 2.709,- and € 4.274,- per month, depending on experience and qualifications;
