Design and development of a bench frame for the second row of seating in a Light Commercial Vehicle in composite material to replace the existing metal bench frame construction.

Scope of the challenge

• Creating a lightweight construction with a weight reduction of min. 30%
•  Development of a bench frame construction while taking into account the automotive safety requirements such as: ECE R14, ECE R17 and ECE R145.
• Gain more knowledge in construction with alternative materials, similar performance.

What is the existing situation?  

• Metal bench frame construction of 45 kg
• Bench construction is a supporting construction and has multiple safety requirements for the automotive industry: ECE R14, ECE R17 and ECE R145

Challenge objectives

Teamwork effort on creating:

• Lightweight solution (reduction of min. 30%)
• Price level around the same or lower than existing, information at a later stage.
• A positive outcome of safety tests and FEM analysis.
