RIGHTWEIGHT Challenge 1

Challenge purpose: Novel interiors cabin design for greenest Aircraft

About the challenge:

Challenge Summary

Objective: To develop a novel design of cabin and cargo aircraft tinteriors in accordance with the changing of the propulsion and energy concept of the next generation aircrafts. In parallel, since the idea of the next future aircraft is that fuel tanks and systems elements will no longer be integrated into the wing but in the fuselage, this issue will require to renew the cabin and cargo space design concept. More in detail, particular attention will be paid about the:

  • Integration of innovative design solution for cabin interior items and relative style, conceiving surfaces easy to clean/sanitize and the implementation of touchless solutions for passengers and crew members.
  • Materials and processes conceived for an environmentally - friendly lightweight solution of the cabin items,100% from recyclable sources.
  • More affordable technologies for materials treatments and processes with the aim to promote the use of recycled carbon fibres (mainlySMC)for semi-structural applications.
  • Manufacturing processes automation in line with Industry 4.0 concepts. Augmented Reality for production and
  • Maintenance, digital solutions for tolerance management and maintenance including big data analytics, supply chain optimization and new material techniques such as 3D printing and additive manufacturing.

Main section of application:

  • Aeronautics

Main cross-cutting topics:

Material supply & development

  • Design & smart functions
  • Manufacturing & assembly
  • Recycling
  • Scope of the challenge

The increase of the average earth temperature is due to the greenhouse effect caused by the exponential growth of carbon dioxide and nitrogen generated by human hands. The aeronautical transport sector accounts for about 2% of the total global carbon dioxide emissions; nevertheless, it has started developing new technologies aimed at reducing carbon dioxide emissions to be implemented in the next future. For that purpose, it is mandatory to adopt drastic measures of emission reductions, for example by using alternative fuels or, also, exploiting the direct combustion of hydrogen in ad hoc turbines or in fuel cells. Changing the propulsion and energy concept will require that some systems, such as fuel tanks, will no longer be integrated into the wing but in the fuselage, then near the cabin and cargo space. Hence, the need to develop a new concept of cabin design. All this, in combination with enhanced strategies to reuse composite laminate material reinforcements, will contribute to aircraft transport sustainability promoting a circular economy.

Challenge objectives:

  • To extend the usage of recyclable material in the aircraft cabin in a range of 70-100%.
  • To reduce fuel consumption with an overall weight reduction of cabin items in the range of 8% ÷ 12% compared to the standard available on the market.
  • Reduction of RC costs at least -5%.
